The Americans seem to have no idea of unselfish chivalry, talking to P_d on board ship about Banking, he could not understand his publishing his pamphlet for 6d if it was worth anything he would have & ought to have made money by it. 30th left at 11.45 by train for N. Northumberland (1 hour) where we had a capital dinner & waited 6 hours at a small but clean Hotel, this is a village of about 10 houses I guess from the verandah. there is to be seen a most beautiful mountain the whole of whose surface up to the very top is one dense forest. this is the most striking thing I have seen yet. Went on by stage in the evening to Lancaster (10 miles)
