are however strong, the bishops appoint the clergy for 2 or 3 years & then they are changed, The American porters do their work very patiently & well it is wonderful what big boxes the Americans travel with. one universal characteristic of this people seems to be that they never open their mouths unless positively necessary, if you ask them to do a thing they do it but dont say "yes Sir" or anything of that sort: the Rr. conductor collecting tickets in the cars does not say "tickets please" but merely stands opposite you in silence & it is quite a fluke if you happen to notice him but he will wait without
