a great part of Indiana. it was on this road I first saw a prairie & there was a prairie fire burning at times brightly I was struck by there seeming to be so few cattle on it but there were a good many near the R.r. depots. it was all a dead level & immense wide spaces without any trees a good bit seemed to be swamp. The country generally through which we have passed is flat much flatter than England & none of our short up & down swaily land. the cars were crammed lots of people having to stand. they never seem to put on more when they have more passengers than usual. There were crowds of people in Chicago & bonfires burning
