of despotism around their people &c ---- Metterich &c --- said "You cannot be secure while American democracy goes forward prosperously. then he went on in his blessed ignorance to draw the accustomed conclusions. ----- But there was much less personal invective than last night. I foolishly went out to a fire & did not hear more & did not get back late & had to change Hotels. I forgot to say that last night a man was addressing the people amid cries every now & then of go on in a semi comic & infirnally blasphemous strain such black guard & almost devillish wickedness i have never heard before
