to La Crosse where we arrived about 3 P.M. on the 8th changed boats here into a much smaller one & propelled by a stern paddle wheel left about 12 P.M. these boats draw very little water & barges are towed alongside with the cargoe & wood to lighten them. changed again below Prescott & arrived at a point about 10 miles from St Paul about 10 A.M. on the 10th. I was very glad to leave the steamers as they were crammed full of passengers & it was impossible to get a place to sleep in. Thence we walked on about 3 miles with a Yankee with whom we eat melons for which this state is famous & which we eat in a wholesale way then dining at the
