seen yet. They tell me this is a very dry climate, & it certainly seems a very luxurient soil; wild vines everywhere the grapes make "native wine" a thin kind of vin ordinaire. then there is the Sars-arilla plant with a fruit something like small grapes. but the melons & water melons are the great things they are most refreshing. 12th Began very windy & cool with rain, drove out a little way 13th Left Minneapolis by Rr. cars St Paul at 11 A.M per steamer down the river arrived with 2 changes & at La Crosse about 8 P.M on the 14th Grounded several times. Yankee ingenuity
