about here is an iron district & the iron is of extraordinary purity being about 70 percent even the rocks seem to have a good deal of ore in them got under weigh again about 11 A.M. arrived at Houghton Portage lake about 9 P.M. Houghton & Hancock are on opposite sides of the lake which is here very narrow & of a deep copper colour owing to the washings coming from the Stamps, & it is feared that unless some steps be taken these washings will fill up the lake in time. It is a naturally pretty situation, steep hills direct up from the lake on both sides & numbers of copper mines are up these sides
