H'd.. Qrs 7" Iowa V. V. Inft Near Raleigh N.C. April 23rd.. 65 Dear Wife I Recd.. your letter of the 11th.. Last night. It found me enjoying my usual good health. was glad to hear that you was well and that Mary was recovering. - I have Glorious news for You this morning but I suppose you have heard it all before this time. I wrote You from Morrisville on the 19" In which I stated that Genl" Joe" Johnson had surrendered his Army to Genl" Sherman and that it was reported that Davis had Given up the Confederacy, but at that time the report lacked Confirmation. It is now Known to be true and we have been Officialy Informed that on the 19th.. inst John. C. Brackenridge the Rebel "Sect" of War" surrendered the Southern Confederacy. from the Atlantic
