Washington D.C. Sept. 18th. 1865 Dear Ace Here am I at last, in this famous city; famous for the great things that have been said and done and for the great men who have lived and labored in it; but infamous for the vice and treason that have been liberated and cultivated in it and that still exist in it. For this city although the capital of the nation is by no means loyal. A large class of it's citizens are real "secesh" and they are supported by another large class which calls itself "conservative", but which the people of the North would call "copperhead"; so that genuine loyal men are probably in the minority.
