I have not yet talked with the President or the Secretary of State; in fact neither of those gentlemen have called upon me since my arrival, - a lack of courtesy at which, of course, I feel very indignant and which I think the people ought to resent. Being an incorruptible patriot and accomplished statesman, like many other great men who assemble here every winter, and filled with an intense desire for my country's good I should have been willing to have given them some good counsel concerning the administration of public affairs. But they have not seen fit to ask my advice; they think I suppose that they can 'run it' without me. I shall let them grope along as best they can and have only to commend them to that old saw: Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. I arrived here on the 14th inst having left Iowa on the 12th. I was very busy while at Fairfield making preparations
