of skirmishers were thrown out and we followed going east some 2 miles. Threw up works in a thick wood near the edge of a large open tract of country on a public road. Hardees corps reported to have moved past this place last night, We are the first Yankees ever seen here and of course astonish the natives The country here is very nice, well cleared up, but few crops in the ground Gen Thomas & Sherman with us closely.
