Blue Ridge on our left looming up mid a haze of smoke, and the immese stretches of open fields along the Rapidan which for grandeur could scarcely be surpassed. Evidences of war are now met with on all sides, Scarcely a vestage of fencing remains, and the numerous Chimnies standing out alone tell of the desolating visit of War, Whole tracts of country containing thousands of acres, lie out and flourish in a lusty growth of grass & clover but not a single head of stock to fatten on it, All along the route we meet
