The 17th & 31st start out to relieve Steedman but are ordered back after going a short distance July 1st Steedman says he can go in to town and is allowed to try, we (1st Brig) act as his support, and sure enough he does and at 10 he goes in while we follow shortly after, The works were strong, Rifle pits a broad abbatis and very heavy fort with place for 12 siege guns, They left several siege guns, lots of amunition tents &c,
