10 She told us the idea that drunkenness is a curable disease is comparatively new and it is only ten years since the first asylum in the United States was opened in Massachusetts. That at Knoxville was opened in 1906 also one for women at Mt Pleasant. During this period of only seven years, 1236 patients were received at Knoxville and 35 at Mt Pleasant. Hon L.S. Coffin of Ft. Dodge helped to organize a society called the "Iowa Band of Helpers" The object of this society is "Help each other to be better men. They give entertainments, musical and others which are a great help. They have a service every Sun. conducted by different pastors and a Wednesday evening prayer meeting. There have been some genuine conversions a very live interest in religious life. More men are coming voluntarily to the asylum and there are fewer escapes. Meeting closed by repeating the mizpah ben.
