The Soldiers Receipt Take a breast or the worst end of a neck of mutton or the like quantity of any flesh meet, chop it small and put it into a pot with ten quarts of water, let it boil all most to pieces, thicken it with two pound of oatmeal, put into it, about four pounds of sliced turnips or parsnips or carrots or potatoes and two quarts of peas or half this quantity of rice, a few onions, and a half penny worth of pepper with or without a suitable quantity of salt; these well boiled will serve ten men a whole day, without bread or drink.
