76 Washington, D.C. May 31, 1870 Joseph A. Dugdale Dear Friend, I have yours of 20th inviting me to attend the proposed Woman's Enfranchisement Convention your city on the 16th and 17th of June. It would afford me great satisfaction to do so but failing health and other hindrances will prevent. Let me therefore add a word on the question which is to summon you together. It is fit that Iowa, with her splendid leadership in the enfranchisement of the negro, should now go forward in the enfranchisement of woman.
