Cheap Dish for the Poor 1/4 lb of rice, 3 lb potatoes, 2 onions or more, an oz or 2 of butter, or 1/2 a lb of bacon cut in small pieces with plenty of pepper or a little allspice - This is a very sufficient & wholesome meal for three or four people. A turnip or carrot makes a good addition boiled over a slow five, to the thickness of pease soup
