Rippey, Greene Co. Iowa Decr. 8th 1877 Dear Sister Ellen - This evening I shall set apart for a chat with you - Today was the last day of school - The children are not using all the table and light to study their lessons for the coming Monday - school will commence again, one week from next Monday - next term will have a new teacher - a stranger to us. Now I can sit and chat with you folks with-out fear of being constantly disturbed to show them about lessons. I hope you are all well & that this letter may find you so. My health is much like it was when last I saw you. The rest are quite well - The people of the neighborhood are well so far as I know. - But few persons are done gathering corn - We are not done - in about one week more we will have one field finished - to turn in cattle - Old Mr. Mantz's renter is helping husk - he is sitting back of the heating stove - I think Pa will hire but little this corn husking - his present help may stay though till we get done. I shall stop my pen for this eve - & resume some other time
