Feb 16 1869 Tuesay Evening My Dear Friend Ellie: As the shade of night gathers around and the labors of the day are completed, the hours for contemplation steals on and my thoughts take flight on the [illegible] of imagination, and in fancy eye methinks I see you convened around the old hearth stone enjoying the conversation of loving parents and affectionate Brothers. Truly tis a happy group and my head feels so badly I will have to bring my letter to a close, but before doing so let me ask you about the ponies, are they still alive? And do you ride any more? As you did not say any thing about them. Tell William and Nathan the next thing I expect to hear about them will be that they are married. Tell them not to forget this old friend when that goes off. Well Ellen thanking you for your long letter and hoping to receive one like it very soon again. I will close by saying give my love to your Father & Mother and your brothers. And retain a goodly portion for your own dear self and a kiss besides I remain as ever your chere friend Hattie
