8 or 9 yrs. of age, dressed in Revolutionary uniform & led by George Washington. In the evening, when riding, we saw them again, returning from the Gardens. Poor little fellows! Tired as they were, & with their three cornered hats, white wigs, ruffled shirts, & long stockings covered with dust, they were as full of fun as ever, & I saw one commander standing before his regiment with an erectness, that would have done credit to an old soldier & apparently listening to Colonel McHenry's speech slyly poking in another little rogue in front of him with his wooden gun, until Gen. Washington noticing the disorder in that part of his army
