Pine Plains March 6th 1860 Mr. John H. Knapp Dear Sir Yours of 24th Feby rec'd. I am not disappointed in not hearing any more favorable account of my brother Henry, yet still as long as there is life there is hope, and therefore I am not entirely without expectation that he may yet reform. I am however inclined to change my first opinion as to having his daughter Carrie removed from California, for if she was gone he would have no inducement nothing to retain him, and knowing it would not be necessary for her welfare for him to do any thing or to regain his former standing & respectability he would make no attempt. He may not as it is, probably will not, possibly he may. I wrote to him [?ing] to have Carrie live with me. I got no answer & of course it does not meet with his approbation. As matters now stand therefore I think for his own benefit it would not be well to have her taken from him. Truly Yours Wm Eno
