Augt 3rd 1859 Camp Seco, Calaveras Co., Cala. John Knapp, Esq Fort Madison, Iowa Dear Sir understanding that Son and a relation of the Hon. H. Eno of this place, I write you in regard to Lums? you may or may not have heard that for the last year or so he has fell into very dissipated habits. It is a fact - a most lamentable one, & as he is getting worse every day, rapidly sinking into a drunkards grave I fear, probably you might - as a relation or in conjunction with his other relations - ( with whom I presume you are acquainted) do something to sour him from the sink of degradation he is rapidly descending into. he has become so low, so lost to all sense of shame - he that was once an ornament to society & held such a high position in this Co. that he is a source of grief to the whole community, & the worst of it is - nothing can be done by any body here to save him. On more than one occasion he has been taken up by the temperance organizations, signed the pledge, was admitted as a member & kept perfectly straight for a week or so, but then commenced again, violated his pledge & became
