Saving...
I [illegible] scarcely say that his property is nearly all out of his hands.-in a very irregular shape & will I fear be all lost. I am now to speak of a more [interesting?] subject I mean his daughter - a very interesting intellegent girl I believe at present something over 14 years old When her mother died, he gave her in charge to a woman in the place to pay for her support at the rate of [illegible] she remained with -- & was well taken care of -- until some time last december, when she refused to keep her any longer, for-- as she alleges -- his bad conduct & non payment of the stipulated amt-, he was then in midst of drinking spell. that announcement woke him up & he quit drinking for about one [illegible] [3 weeks?], in the mean time he had asked my wife in the most imploring terms to take charge of her on the same terms as the former woman had her - my wife & I consented on condition he would solemnly promise never to taste a drop of liquor again - he did so, but no sooner has she comfortably settled than he commenced again worse than ever. For the first 5 mo he pd for her support, but since then he has neglected her very much -- scarcely even comes near her & it certainly would be better for the child she should never see him in his present condition. I remember he told us after her mother died
