29 two weeks with Mrs Jackson. Mrs Mitchell Pres. Mrs Alexander Sec'y. Jan. 5. 1886 The Cary Club met with Mrs. Rathbun, six members present. It was a meeting of great expectation to some. Of great disappointment to others, some clamoring for office. Others glad to step down and out. The subject of French authors was discussed or rather author as Victor Hugo was the only one. Miss Durham gave interesting facts about his birth, his success as an author, his sympathy with the poor ect. He was greatly beloved by his people and his writings are more from sympathy than reason The greater part of the afternoon was spent in reading the Battle of Waterloo. Each lady reading a chapter as we did not have time to finish it, we decided to do so at next meeting. It being the day to elect officers for the coming year, the voting resulted as follows. Pres. Mrs. Jackson. Vice Pres. Mrs Rathbun. Sec. Mrs Cook As the voting was mostly done by proxy it seemed satisfactory to all.
