Feb 20, 1917. W.C.T.U. met at the Cong. church. Mrs. Brande led the devotional exercises. After singing "Brightly Beams our Fathers Mercy" she read Ps. 46. God is our Refuge. in these threatening times as well as in the past. She then led in prayer. Minutes read and ap. [Miss?] Jennie Bailey was appointed to secure the [window] for our Market Day. It was voted to offer one prize $3.00 for the best temperance essay in the 8th grade of our public schools. It was left to Department Supt. [Miss?] Buck to purchase blotters or [Quarterlies?] for teachers, Mrs. Watland reported that the Grinell State [Marshal?] [Club?], having disbanded, Mr. Willard turned over to “[illegible]” W.C.T.U. $3.56 from their treasury. A rising vote of thanks was given. It was voted to add this to the Mile of Dimes for State Constitutional Pro.work. Mrs. Lincoln had the program. Topic. Present Day Reformers. Rev. Mr. [Sopher?] gave a very earnest and inspiring talk. [He?] paid a high tribute to the Union but that we should be more fearless. Mrs. [Condard?] was present and asked the Union to help organize a Parents Teachers' Ass. at the South School. We agreed to help if some could be found to lead. As Mrs. Sopher said the unlucky number of 13 were present. [Miss?] Jennie Bailey Sec. prs. term.
