Fort Madison March 29, 1838 My dear Father - I have written you and brother William a number of letters within the last five months but have not received any answer and I am fearful that you have not received them & think me careless & inattentive - our mails until the first of Jany last were very irregular and I therefore sent several letters to St. Louis to be mailed there - the mails are now regular twice a week and I hope to hear from you frequently I will write often - Since I last wrote you I have left the Territory of Single Blessedness & entered into the State of Wedlock - I know this news will surprise you and am rather afraid that you will not be pleased with it as you will probably think I was too old a Bachelor to think of altering my situation - The girl I have married I have been acquainted with for about four years & a half - she is sixteen years younger than I am - She is the youngest daughter of the late Gen John H Knapp who first settled this town & was previously from Tioga Co N.Y - her name is Elizabeth - This was no hasty thoughtless act of mine for with me the romance of Youth is over and gone I wished to have a home I could call my own to settle down & have some one at my fire side who was not a stranger - for here I had no relative of any kind nearer than a thousand miles and of course so must feel at times lonely enough - Elizabeth has been brought up to industrious habits is of a domestic turn & I believe of a good temper & disposition. - If the old maxim is correct to
