shall if I wish it the [option? time?] of holding the offer is three years it has not been profitable as yet, but will be in a few years -- We have had an election lately our legislation consists of 13 members of the council & 26 representatives. I came out about six weeks ago as a candidate for the council but declined & withdrew my name from the canvass, because I came to the conclusion I could make nothing by it and I did expect an appointment from the Govr of [Commissioners] to ascertain the boundary line between Wisconsin & this Terr. but owing to the [witness?] of a friend of mine who undertook to see see the Govr when the subject I did not receive it. I saw the Govr a few days ago & he expressed a strong regret that he did not know that I wished the appointment. I am not sorry I declined running as my object is to better my circumstances & I can do no more by attending to my own business than by attending to that of the dear people. I declined when it was very generally believed there was no doubt of my election. [illegible] to money matters in this County, I have never known the times as hard. I have been unable to collect anything I have actually found myself worn [pinched?] for money two months past then for the last two years. I hope however to see some changes before next spring--my circumstances are actually better then they ever were still I have been considerably perplexed of late. Almost any amount of money can be loaned on the very best of [necessity?] at from 20 to 25 percent. In answer to your inquiries respecting Elizabeth & her family-- her father was one of the first settlers in Fort Madison & died in Jan'y 1836 leaving five children two girls and three boys-- the oldest of the girls Almeida married a Joseph Douglas at Bloomburg in Pa. and lived in Penn Yan [even].
