Fort Madison Aug 1 1839 Dear Mother For some time past I have had it in contemplation to visit now my home but am for the present forced to abandon the idea and with the utmost reluctance am compelled to forego the pleasure of seeing my Father for at least the present year. Should life and health be spared me however I am determined to see News York again within a twelvemonth. I am in enjoyment of good health and so at present is Elizabeth, her health hass not however been very good for the last three months
