Fort Madison Oct 20 1839 My Dear Father This is the first day since the 9th of August that I have felt able to write to you and I believe the first time for many years that I have been obliged to write to you that I have been sick - but so it is on the 9th of August at night I was taken with a violent headache which continued for two days when I sent for a physician. He [apprehended?] no difficulty gave me some medicine & told me I should be well in a few days - but my headache continued & [decided?] symptoms of a congestive fever appeared. I had to have all the hair on my head shaved & ice applied for five days & nights on the 12th day my fever turned and I was getting well but in a fortnight after I had a relapse which was worse than the first & but little hopes were entertained of my recovery (?) aided by a strong constitution first rate medical (?) & the kind care of Elizabeth (?) the favor of a divin providence I have recovered I am able to be about a little - I have been reduced from my usual weight of 168 to less than 130 but I feel well have now a good appetite & think I shall soon regain my usual strength - My sickness has been particularly unfortunate for me for the District court has been held here in the mean time & I had about forty causes which I was engaged in some of which went off & some were continued & some lost & I was owing some money & have collected nothing (?) an hundred dollar medical bill but that I can't grumble at - I have not lost my courage or am I depressed in spirits as I have every
