August 1st 1840 Fort Madison My dear Father - I rec'd your kind letter of Jun 29 and was extremely glad to hear from you for it is a long time since I have heard from my Eastern home - It is also a long time since I have written for since I last wrote I have had nothing to write but what would have been (painful?) to you to hear and a great part of the time I have been unable even to (illegible) a letter. My life the past year has been spent in sickness & pain with but a little intermission - the fever again set in after my recoving from the fever and continues at intervals until about ten weeks ago, in the mean time I have had the mumps which lasted about three weeks, about ten weeks min I had another attack of bilious fever from which I recovered in about a week and have been afflicted since with an inflammation in my eyes with which I have been confined to a dark room for three weeks and which is still very bad, this being the first attempt to write or even to look at a letter or paper min. I was (illegible) and nothing but knowing your anxiety to hear from me would have tempted me to break over my doctors orders - I write a few lines & then rest and again (?) which does not appear to last me the difficulty is there is a constant blur before my eyes which will take time to remove - This is a melancholy picture & I am sorry I can draw no other (stitt?) & am satisfied my constitution is not much impaired and my courage is not destroyed -- it is also a great
