Saving...
Albany March 7, 1836 Dear Father I left Penn Yan a week ago Thursday and arrived here the same week on Saturday evening - I had a little business put into my hands which would about defray my expenses which was my inducement in coming I also wished to obtain some letters from various persons of influence which might perhaps benefit me in the Country when I think of going - I wrote to you some time previous to my leaving Penn Yan but had not received an answer when I left - I have long entertained the idea that I could better myself by removing to the west and that conviction has been growing stronger & stronger every day - I may be mistaken for I cannot read the future - I shall bring into action all the energies which nature has given me and if I fail I am determined it shall be my misfortune not my fault - I cannot acquire that competence which is my aim where I am at present situated - others have done well by removing to the West and why can't I - I do not think of abandoning my profession but I wish to connect something else with it - where I am I cannot - it is my determination to devote myself more ardently than ever to acquire celebrity in my profession - and I believe I shall indeed - I am undetermined as to my location, that will depend upon information which I shall receive hereafter - it will however be at such plan as I conceive will eventually be the Capitol of the State of Illinois - Since I have been here I have been introduced to Gov Marcy and he has given me a very flattering letter of introduction to Gov Duncan of Illinois, and I have procured others to different persons in that State
