Fort Madison Wisconsin Territory March 11 1837 Dear Father I received your letter of the 23rd of January on the 10th First, it came to Peoria and was forwarded to me from there at the same time I received five other letters from different places and a large budget of papers, which were the first letters or papers I have had since I have been here - you have doubtless received ere this a letter I wrote from Peoria informing you of my intention of leaving there for this place - I am afraid you will think I am feebleminded in leaving a place that offered me so many advantages and with which I was so well pleased - but I am still of the opinion that I shall better myself - I thought too that this section of country offered me greater advantages in my profession - in the part of Wisconsin which is west of the Mississipi there are six counties in which a circuit or rather district court is held twice a year - there are but few lawyers and there not very eminent in their profession - I shall go to the circuit which commences at this place in a fortnight from tomorrow, and believe I shall obtain business of a profitable nature at each County, they are accustomed to pay high prices to lawyers and I shall have my share of business - by going the circuit which will take about six weeks I shall make many new acquaintances. I shall become acquainted with the Country and in course of time I anticipate it will be of much advantage to me - I have invested $400 in some purchases and think I can already take an hundred per cent for it - I wrote to William that land here was not yet in market, but that the claims of settlers were respected as much as if they had good title deeds. I purchased a claim as it is called about a mile & a half from town by which I can hold 240 acres, there is a very good hewed log house on it and some other improvements. I gave $200 for it, and intend keeping it until I can get a title from Government and until it rises in value - I have no doubt that in five years it will be worth fifty times more than I gave for it - it is beautiful land well timbered & watered & would be worth and $100 an acre in Dutchess - It will be my object to make myself as well known in my profession as I can, to build up a reputation for industry and to the best of my power for talent & integrity - to ask for no office of any kind until I find that I am in independent circumstances - to owe no man - and square my expences by my means - Since I have been here which in five weeks I have been retained in several cases and have done some conveyancing - In another year it is probable that the Country West of the Mississipi will be organized into a new territory which will be attended with some advantages to us - Wisconsin is divided into three Judicial Districts, the Judges are appointed by the President & Senate - Judge Irvine presides in this Circuit - I have become acquainted with him and told him of my intention of going the circuit with him and he seemed to be well pleased with it -
