of navigation and I have no doubt but that this county and the county west of us have received an eruption of population of 4000 inhabitants - Persons best acquainted with the country say that that part of Wisconsin west of the river will have a population sufficiently large in 1840 to admit of its becoming a state - About three weeks since I took a horse travelled up to the Indian boundary line about fifty miles & went on to the Des Moines river followed it to its mouth & no farther [illegible] - The weather was fine & this prarie country is seen to its greatest advantage - I do not believe there is a handsomer river in the far west then the Des Moines or a better country than borders it - The government surveyors are now engaged in surveying it in sections - & the probability is that it will come in market next year The seasons are different here from what I expected - The winter is longer and colder, they as I suffer about the same here as in New Jersey or New York city - The farmers raise what they call the Ohio corn but are getting in the notion of cultivating the Northern or "Yankee Corn" Wheat looks very well & is now ripe. The prospects of the corn crop is very good should the frost - hold off - we celebrated the 4th of July in very good style for a new & wild country about 500 persons came in to hear me give them a Western speech and we all sat down to a dinner in the open air. I received a letter a few days ago from Edward for a long time I have been fearful he would be crushed in the storm which blew over New York & the whole country and was also afraid that William would be affected by it from his letter I should gather that he would outlive the gale, but still I am afraid he will not - he is thinking of coming west, but I do not believe he will better himself if he does - The west have now too many merchants and speculation in lands may prove successful & may not - it is not to be adventured upon now - if he has lost, but has a character for honesty & business qualifications New York is the place for him - A.W.
