mind to the study of my profession to do this I must have books and it would take me perhaps years before I could buy and pay down for such a library as I wanted and in the meantime I should lose what I prize more than money, that is my own improvement in my profession. I also knew that if I could get influential & rich men engaged for me, could get them to purchase a library for me and engage them by the strongest of ties, self interest, I could build up an interest for me which would have an important bearing - I have done so. I have a library which cost three hundred dollars & a friend of mine has given his notes for it - and if I cannot meet the payments he will himself, without grumbling, relying upon me to do it when able - A consequence of which purchase has been as I anticipated, through his influence I got the appointment of Martin & Examiner in Chancery, which will go some way in paying his liabilities. I have rented as good an office as any in the place for which I am to pay fifty dollars per year - this however I pay in my way from business my landlord is to give me who is a merchant - I have also taken as a partner a young man David Proper who has yet two years to study before he can be admitted in the Supreme Court - I give him a share of business - I thought it best for a number of reasons I want some one in the office at all times & he is a person of good habits much industry & has many influential friends & relations in this Country & is also a member of the methodist church which is rather an important consideration at present for there is no small share of favoritism here -- Nevins a lawyer in good standing wished me to enter into Partnership with him but our
