Saving...
to his father & Stephen Thorne respecting it. if they wish to save him from States prison they will have to render him some apurtance. At this present Court I made a motion which coming from me created considerable sensation, it was that the Judges of the Court, members of the bar, & students at Law form themselves into a temperance Society in accordance with the recommendation of Chief Justice savage - It was well taken, the bar had a meeting accordingly, & the first Judge was chosen President & myself secretary. Most of the members of the bar have joined it. At our circuit Court I succeeded as well as I could expect. I believe I mentioned to you I had one suit against Doct Judd for tresspass in taking grain. I obtained a verdict of $203 -- against him his cousel made out a bill of exceptions but have now settled it. Another case was an action of Expectment for a Widow's dower & also obtained a verdict - both cases were closely contested and agreeable to a resolution. I had made to try my own causes, I did so. I very much wish I had your opinion on it, but I cannot now get it in time - I feel confident the Circuit Judge will sustain the verdict of the Jury & if so the opposite side will carry it up to the S. Court as the Defts are rich and my client is poor. I shall send the bill of exceptions to William and want him & you to consider it. As to my pecuniary matters, my debts are in status quo, except I have paid (illegible) $150 for my library & also a few others. I dont feel uneasy, I can (illegible) if I have my health meet my other engagements with (illegible) and free myself from some other encumbrances by next year. -- I still think I shall be
