Saving...
Penn Yan March 13. 1834 Dear Father I have just received your letter and feel very much mortified at having been so negligent in my correspondence as to cause any uneasiness - I received Williams letter enclosing me a certificate of deposit for $500 a few days after it was written and am very certain that I immediately answered it, but can not call it to mind so as to be positive - The advantage which I derive from having made the arrangement with William for the money he sent me, is greater than you can well imagine I have been enabled to pay off certain debts & to save myself from being sued, and the cost consequent upon it. I have also been enabled to save $85 by it, which my creditors were glad to deduct for the sake of being paid down - I save myself the mortification of being dunned - I have a credit equal to that of any one in the country I can also attend to my business undisturbed by those cares & perplexities which would otherwise harass & disturb & distract my attentions - I feel confident that I can pay the amount at the expiration of the year - or that at least I shall have enough due me to pay it - for my business is as good as I can reasonably expect and I believe my reputation as a lawyer and an advocate is increasing - & I also feel conscious that I occupy a station which commands the respect of even those who are not my friends - I have enjoyed good heath since my visit at the Plains with the exception of about a week when I was obliged to keep the house on account of a bad cold - & have been obliged to confine myself rather more closely to my office than ever for after my return I had to prepare for the circuit & common Pleas I also prepare my causes for the Term -
