Saving...
Fort Madison March 26 1848 Dear Father I received a letter from brother Edward a few days since in which he mentions receiving one from you some time last month and I was sorry to learn that your health was not as good as usual, I hope that the mild & pleasant weather of spring will renew your strength & restore your health. My health has been very good the past winter - last year I had a bad cough which lasted me four or six months but have had no return of it for some time, Elizabeth is I think better altho not well. Edward writes to me that Christina was quite unwell & that his children were in good health and were enjoying the advantages of an excellent school, he aslo says that his farming operations will prove profitable this season. This I am very much rejoiced to hear for it really seems that his industry and enterprise deserves success - he may not make as much money as if he had remained in New York and continued in business there but I am satisfied that for one of his constitution & temperament, (predisposed to pulmonary complaints) he would not have lived long had he not gone into other business, and in removing to the west he finds a climate better suited to his constitution - besides he has four very promising children and if brought up within the corrupting influences of such a Babel as New York is, the chances would be much against them - he some thinks of paying a visit to New York the present season, but says his business will be such that it will be difficult to leave - I too have thought very many
