Saving...
some day to be very valuable - the other fifty acres part of the ninety is most of it in your name and lies in the town plat - the town is laid out on 600 acres- If I sell this forty acres I shall have to part with it at a great sacrifice as I think, shall have to sell it on credit and then get the obligations shaved at a ruinous rate of discount - Now I go to California & if I like the country shall remain there, if I do not, & can, I shall return - I shall stay there however long enough to give it a fair trial - My Whig friends in this Country will give me a strong reccommendation to Gen Taylor. They say I am fit for a Judge there & I know I am better qualified than such articles as they have here - I shall ask for the appointment, with however but little hopes of succeeding - It is doubtful however whether California will be organised as a territory this winter - but I shall go to Washington City look around me & be governed by circumstances - I would take anything that would pay my expenses or even a part of it - - Jones one of our U.S. Senators was Surveyor General of this State & Wisconsin - & he did not know more about surveying than I do of Egyptian Hierogliphics but he had friends at head quarters- I am fifty years old - this may be to others an objection but it is not to me - I am not as old as Columbus was, when he undertook a longer voyage - success finally crowned his efforts -
