Whitney Rodgers You knew Willam Becker the report is (wich I think is true) that he is enlisted for 6 years & to wrk in the navy yard with a cannon ball chaind to his leg and to serve 3 years in the army all without pay the report is he under took to mak off with $7,000 of the governments money I think he was quarter master as to crops we have better grain in this neighbor hood than last year we had some showers that kept it along thare is not much complainte of weval oats not as large straw as last year butt [well?] filled corn (in the corn sections) looks good potatoes look fine and promis a big yeald but hay was the smallest crop I ever knew I cut over more ground than last year and I could have put it all in my horse barn and not ben full [then?] the [illegible] grain nearly harvested it is rather wet just now for harvesting whet I wish some of your hay war here it would be worth something to you and me to it was worth $15,00 per [ton] in haying butt I doe not borrow any trouble about it I have seen dry times before and have lived through them and may this I have not had any hired man since the 4th of July I have a boy a month now I shall not need to hire much more we are all well wich is a great blessing there has ben considerable sickness here this year Henry [T] Curtis died a short time ago he was not sick long ago he had the tiphoid
