Philadelphia Dec the 20 1868 Thomas i now take my pen to inform thee that we think thee had better come home and escape the draft and not run the risk of being drafted for it wont cost much over one hundred dollar to come and go back again and that would not be mutch towards paying it subsitue not knowing whether they could get one or not men has to go now. Money wont doo thee know very well that we can not have the go to war, get married, then start the same day and not have it said that the came away to escape the draft but call it it bridal tour tell catherine that she need not be afraid to come for we should be very glad to see her, dont stay and get caught in the trap for then there will be no escape.
