54. for living that can scarsely be equalled. The recuperative power of a rebounding physical vitality restored the energy temporarily each night for another devitalizing interval. At the beginning of each succeeding semester my petition to take additional hours of work would go in anew to the committee. The petition always being granted, as many hours as were permitted were added to the regular schedule or semester following semester. Grades had to be retained at a high level in order to take extra hours. Grades also had to be up, to keep the high-school scholarship which was taking me through the University. One slip and it necessarily would have been forfeited. In college again there were the "extra-curricular" activities which so nicely balance and supplement a program of work and study. Swimming and basket-ball during the recreational hour, intermural sports for girls, singing in the chorus, a tepid interest in a literary society but wholly a lack of interest in other organisations, a thankless and boring task of making posters for some or other activity; concerts, lectures, plays; dates, canoeing, fries, movies - and
