April 3 - '39 The Cary Club met at the home of Mrs. Winter with the president, Mrs. Seger, presiding. Fourteen members responded to roll call with quotations from Washington Irving. Mrs. Shumack and Mrs. Waffle were reported on the sick list. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Mrs. Winter was in charge of the lesson, who told of the life of Washington Irving and his writings. He was called "The first American man of letters." Some of his well known books are "Tales of a Traveller," Legender of Alhambra" and Bracebridge Hall." Mrs. Winter read the description of Ichabod Crane and the return of [Rap?] Saw Winkle, both [takers?] from his best known book "The Sketch Book." Current events were discussed by the members.
