Dubuque, Iowa 3d May 1857 My dear Gov. I am again indebted to you for a short but most comprehensive note under date of the 25th Ulto., as it explains to me the cause of the great injustice which has been done to me and my constituents in reference to the recent appointments in this state and the failure to withdraw the lands from Market, thus heaping injury upon the actual settlers, for whom the President in his Inaugural wisely & justly declared these lands should be withheld from Public sale. They are now to be made the prey of hordes of heartless speculators. If I had supposed that such a man as Bright, who is covered all over with blotches from Congressional & other corruption, as I in the most emphatic and earnest manner assured Mr Buchanan was the case the day I last saw you in Washington, was to be invested with the power to injure me or any
