were. Both of us feeling hurt and uncertain. Life is too full of unhappiness as it is for us to make more for ourselves so I'm glad I told you what I did in that letter even though your reply may lacerate my pride. Somehow - with one of those presentiments I often have - I don't think it will. I felt you striking obliquely at me - and if I'm right in thinking you were hurt and felt that I was cool & indifferent then it means that instead of being basically antagonistic we are actually alike even in that. And I'll know you better and know that I dare be myself toward you.
