The Corinth road assended the hill and pursued a south westerly course across the battlefield crossing the Purdy road near the Shilo Church 2 1/2 miles from the river Sherman said "you might serch the world over and not find a more advantageous field." flanks well protected by Snake & Lick Creeks Owl Creek in front. The ground broken and thickly covered with timber with here and there small fields. Crossed in various directions by roads leading to all parts of the field. Grants forces were encamped in easy supporting distance of each other in one night this position could have been made impregniable with some earth works But Grants reply to Buckner a Ft. Donnolson "I propose to move immediately on your works" was the war cry
