Thus the night wore away. General Grant determined to take time by the forelock and be the attacking party. The gray dawn of morning found him with Lew Wallaces division & General McCook, Gen Nelsons, & Gen Crittendens divisions of Buels army. Moving his forces out he immediately brought on the engagement The same ground was fought over but the union forces were gaining inch by inch what they had lost on the day previous. The confederates stubornly resisted not wishing to give up the ground that they had gained at such a terrible sacrifice. But the fresh troops were invincible and those that had been in the engagement the day before were desirous of gaining what they had lost
