The Vicksburg Campaign The city of Vicksburg occupied an important position during the forepart of the war. It has generally been believed that the first gun of the war was fired in Charlston harbor but this is a mistake Gov Pettus of Miss had a crazy notion that the North intended to to overrun the South with hords of abolitions to create riots and incite the slaves to rebelion gave the military organizations of the city orders to plant a battery above the city and stop all boats coming down the river Those that did not stop were fired upon we all remember the indignation at the north at this act of the Governer of Miss. On the 25" of April 62 Farragut fleet captured New Olean's. Pettus conceived the idea of fortifying Vicksburg and accordingly sent Col Autry to superintend the work.
