On the 18" of May Farragut arrived from New Orleans with his fleet and demanded it's surrender which was refused. At this time it could have been easily taken the works were very imperfect however he did not fire a gun until the 26" this was kept up by Farraguts fleet from below and Davises from above the city until July 24" when it was abandoned without even hindering the rapid work on the fortifications. About the 20" of June Gen Williams commenced to dig a canal across Youngs (or DeSoto) point which was also abandoned when Farragut & Davis left with their fleets. Col Autry had been superceeded by Gen Lovell but the citizens did not like him and he was removed and Maj Gen Van Dorn put in command but about Dec I" he was removed and
