It was a grand stragetic movement saved the Army that was moving through Miss In order to preserve the dicipline and the moral of his Army Sherman moved up the Arkansas river, and on the 9" & 10" of January captured Arkansas Post with 7000 prisoners. Then droped down the Mississippi river and was joined at Milikens Bend by Grants forces that had embarked on board of transports at Memphis. During the months of January & February Grant was at work on the canal across Youngs point which was to be 60 ft wide & 5 ft deep. This was not all north of Vicksburg was a net work of bayous rivers & waterways leading to the Yazoo & Tallahatchee rivers
