He makes a stubborn fight but is driven loosing 500 men & two cannons. The Position A rail road runs east from Vicksburg to Jackson Crossing the Big Black river at Bovina. Edwards station is the first station east of the Big Black. The town of Raymond is 14 miles SE of Edwards Station and the same distance SW from Jackson. Clinton is the first Station on the R.R. west of Jackson. "Grant cannot live long without rations and away from his gunboats was Jeff Davises message to Pemberton." Proceed to Mississippi and take Chif Command of the forces is the message from Richmond to Joseph E Johnston who was at Tallahousa. He arrives at Jackson.
